CIPLE- Initial Certificate of Portuguese Language

The CIPLE corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level A2. This exam assesses the fundamental ability of the candidates to deal with daily communicative circumstances at the professional front or study. This exam level indicates that the candidates are able to deal with the communicative circumstances that require very less use of Portuguese. 

The CIPLE comprises of three parts:
  • Reading and Written Expression
  • Understanding the Oral
  • Speaking/Utterance

CIPLE Exam Structure

Reading and Written Expression

This part requires the candidates to understand the information given in Portuguese. This part consists of 2 sections:

Section 1: The information is public and short texts, can be instruction warnings on display on roads, or shops; instruction for the usage of medicine; information linked to the directions or accommodation related; general news, etc. 

Section 2: Candidates are asked to write an informal text or a brief message to a friend, colleague, or a letter on the issue/topic given.
  • Type of questions: Multiple-choice; true and false; and matching
  • Duration: 1 hour and 15minutes
  • Score:  This part has a weightage of 45% of the total

Understanding the Oral

In this part, Candidates are required to listen to a text, and answer questions accordingly.  This part indicates that the candidates are able to understand in Portuguese- the general information given; social interactions, instruction on directions, timetables, banks, post office, accommodation and health related; information and viewpoints on any issue or event or telephone message, etc. 
  • Type of questions: Multiple-choice; true and false; and matching items
  • Duration:  30 mins 
  • Score:  This part has a weightage of 30% of the total.

Speaking/Utterance

This part indicates that candidates can converse in Portuguese in the following situations: take part in social communicative interactions; answer questions asked at the Immigration; answer questions / routine instructions at Immigration, giving the requested information; ask simple questions and information related to a product, travel or health; take part in informal conversation and express his/her viewpoints.
  • Duration:10-15 minutes with each pair of candidates 
  • Score:  This part has a weightage of 25% of the total score
This part has three sections:

Section 1: This section involves an interaction between the candidate and examiner, wherein the examiner asks questions to candidate about themselves.

Section 2: Involves role playing 

Section 3: This section consists of an interaction between the candidate and examiner on a topic linked to current affairs/events.

Scoring

Candidates who attain a score between 85% and 100% are classified as “Very Good
Candidates who attain a score between 70% and 84% are given the rating as “Good
Candidates who attain a score between 55% and 69% are given the rating as “Enough”
