CAPLE- Portuguese Language Proficiency Test

CAPLE-Centre for Evaluation of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (In Portuguese: Centro de Avaliacao de Portugues Lingua Estrangeira)  is a proficiency certificate  in European Portuguese as a Second language prepared by the Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon. Candidates whose mother tongue is not Portuguese and is required to demonstrate their level of command in the Portuguese language may take CAPLE exams. The CAPLE examination is offered in Portugal and 45 other countries.

CAPLE Exam Levels

The CAPLE exam has five 5 levels:

Level A2: CIPLE - Initial Certificate of Portuguese foreign language (Certificado inicial de portugues lingua estrangeira) 

Level B1: DEPLE - Elementary Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma elementar de portugues lingua estrangeira)

Level B2: DIPLE - Intermediate Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma intermedio de portugues lingua estrangeira) 

Level C1: DAPLE - Advanced Diploma of Portuguese Language (Diploma avancado de portugues lingua estrangeira) 

Level C2: DUPLE - University Diploma of Portuguese Language
(Diploma universitario de portugues lingua estrangeira)

The exam levels correspond to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) levels. Candidates who wish to obtain Portuguese citizenship must possess level A2 or higher in Portuguese.  The level A2, B1 and B2 have school versions also. 

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who wish to sit for the CAPLE exams must be:

Aged 14 or above

A citizen of a country where the official language is not Portuguese; or if the candidate is from the country where Portuguese is the official language, in that case, he/she must satisfy the following conditions:
  • The first language of their parents' is not Portuguese
  • Their first language gained was not Portuguese
  • Their primary language of communication is not Portuguese
  • All or part of their basic or secondary studies was not in Portuguese

Examination Dates

 The CAPLE examinations are conducted in May, July, and November at the various testing centres. The CAPLE exams are held in August, February, September, October and March in Lisbon only.

CAPLE Exam Structure

The test comprises of 4 parts: 
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Production and Interaction Written
  • Listening Comprehension 
  • Oral Production and Interaction

Reading Comprehension

In this part, candidates are required to understand the information given. This part has a percentage of 20% of the total.
  • Duration: 20 minutes

Production and Interaction Written

In this part, candidates are required to fill out forms and enter personal information, and develop understandable and clear informational texts on matters related to private domains.
  • Duration: 20 minutes
 This part holds a 15% weigthage of the total. 

Understanding the Oral

In this part, candidates are required to understand simple interaction or conversations on matter related to the public and private concerns
  • Duration: 25 minutes
 This part hold a weightage of 35% of the total.

Production and Oral Interaction

In this part, candidates are required to take part in simple, brief communicative conversation on matters related to public and private events or concerns, or related to professional fields. There is an interaction between the examiner and the candidate.
  • Duration: 10-15 minutes with every pair of candidates.
 This part has a weightage of 30% of the total.
 

CAPLE Exams Registration and Fees

  • Candidates must fill out a registration form and submit. To register, go to https://caple.letras.ulisboa.pt/inscricao
  • Select an examination centre, time and exam level while filling the form.
  • After submission of the form, a confirmation email is sent to the candidates with the candidate code. Save the code as it is required for the examination and to check the result. The examination date and centre are being sent by email.

** You can register for 1 test only per season. 

Candidates are required to pay the tuition and registration fee of the exam. The fee of each level varies.

Results

Candidates can check the result of the examination by entering the candidate code they have received after filling up the form. To know the results, visit the official website of CAPLE https://caple.letras.ulisboa.pt/ Log in to your account and access your result.
