DEPLE - Diploma in Elementary Portuguese Foreign Language

The DEPLE-Diploma in Elementary Portuguese Foreign language corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level B1. This level indicates that the candidates are able to communicate in Portuguese language in daily normal situations, at workplace and study. This level comprises of 4 parts:
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Written Expression
  • Understanding the Oral
  • Utterance

DEPLE Structure

Reading Comprehension

This part indicates that candidates are able to use Portuguese language in day-to-day communication circumstances. They understand the instruction on ads, medicines, flyers; get the essence of the article or news; understand the information or text in advertising pamphlets, reports, etc.

This part also point out that the candidates are able to use Portuguese in the workplace. They are able to understand the report or information related to the professional domain. 

Candidates are able to use Portuguese in the communicative circumstances while studying. They understand the matter/content of the study area, though the speed of reading is slow.
  • Type of questions: Multiple-choice; true and false; and matching items
  • Duration:  30 minutes
  • Score: This part has a weightage of 25% of the total.

Written Expression

This part comprises of 2 sections:
Section 1: Includes text production, or express your viewpoints, or describe a situation. 
Section 2: Includes writing a message.

This level indicates that candidates can use Portuguese in day-to-day communication circumstances, such as writing cards, messages or letter etc. 

Candidates are capable to use Portuguese in workplace for writing professional letters, informal message or for preparing a brief memorandum of a meeting.

Also, candidates are able to use the language for study purpose, i.e. for taking notes during lecture or seminar; writing a synopsis, etc.

Understanding the Oral

This part requires the candidates to listen to dialogues and fact-based radio texts, and answer questions accordingly. 

This part indicates that the candidate can use Portuguese in day-to-day interactions, such as understand the social interactions, views on social and personal life, and instructions related to accommodation, directions, health, etc. 

Candidates are able to use Portuguese in study area, i.e. they understand the instructions given in the classroom, or information or subject of a conference or lecture. 

Candidates are able to use the language in the workplace, i.e. they understand daily instructions and activities. 
  • Duration:  40 minutes
  • Score: This part has 25% weightage of the total.

Utterance

This part comprises of three sections and requires two candidates at one time:
Section 1: Includes interaction between the candidate and the examiner 
Section 2: Includes communicative circumstances of educational or professional domain 
Section 3: Comprise of an interaction between the examiner and the candidate on the basis of the prompt given before the interview.
  • Total time:  20 minutes 
  • Score: This part has 25% weightage of the total
This part signifies that candidates are able to use Portuguese to communicate in daily situations, such as give personal details; ask for directions to get around; do stay arrangements by phone and deal with the circumstances that arise while your stay; buy and negotiate for the products; handle everyday situations, share views and feelings, etc. 

Candidates are able to use Portuguese in the workplace communicative environment, i.e. they are capable to exchange opinions with colleagues on likely matters; give information on daily events/matters, etc. 

Candidates are able to use the language for academic matters pertaining to the study area.

Scoring

Candidates who attain a score between 85% and 100% are classified as “Very Good”
Candidates who attain a score between 70% and 84% are given the rating as “Good”
Candidates who attain a score between 55% and 69% are given the rating as “Enough”
