DIPLE- Intermediate Diploma in Portuguese Foreign Language 

The DIPLE corresponds to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) level B2. This exam level gives the candidate a degree of independence that enables them to deal with different communicative circumstances. The candidate at this level knows the language well and is able recognize the syntactic structures and use the language is less expected situations. Candidates are able to identify and use more common phrases; understand and differentiate between the main and secondary written and oral texts. At this exam level, Portuguese is both the working and communication language, with certain level of complications.  

This level has five parts:
  • Reading Comprehension 
  • Written Expression 
  • Structural competence 
  • Understanding the Oral 
  • Utterance
Every part has 20% weightage of the total 

DIPLE Exam Structure

Reading Comprehension

This part has two sections:
Section 1: Includes a short text
Section 2: Consists of two texts

Candidates are required to understand the text and answer questions accordingly. Questions are multiple choices, true or false and matching items.
  • Duration:  45 minutes
The candidate is able to use the language in day-to-day communicative situations, such as understand most of the content themselves; understand different forms of media texts, etc.

Candidates are able to use the language in the workplace, i.e. understand the information or report on less known or known topics, get the general meaning of the report, etc. 

In the study domain, candidates who use Portuguese language are able to understand information related to matters of non-academic training courses; understand articles and books that are not very convoluted.

Written Expression

This part comprises of two sections:
Section 1: Requires the candidates to write a personal letter or letter to an institution in about 160-180 words
Section 2: Requires the candidate to produce a descriptive text on the topic given in about 160-180 words.Candidates must select one topic from the three topics given.
  • Duration: 1 hour and 15 minutes
This part indicates:
Candidates are able to use Portuguese in day-to-day written communication. 
Candidates are able to use Portuguese in the workplace: develop texts or messages and provide information on a product or service; give dictation; etc.
Candidates are able to use the language for study: can take notes during seminar or lecture or from written sources; develop written content on educational work, etc.  

Structural Competence

This part requires the candidate to complete the text give and transform the sentences. Candidates are required to react in an appropriate manner to the items given. Candidates must make use of the following appropriately and at the right place: conjunctions, verbal moods, articles, noun forms, prepositions, tenses, vocabulary, idioms etc. 
  • Duration:  45 minutes

Understanding the Oral

This part has three sections:
Section 1: Consists of a dialogue related to day-to-day communicative circumstances
Section 2: A radio program is being played and candidates are required to listen to the program and answer the questions accordingly
Section 3: This section consists of excerpts from a conference/seminar, or a text that has information or viewpoints. 
Candidates must listen to it and answer accordingly.
  • Types of questions:  Matching items; multiple-choice, and true or false type 
  • Duration:  40 minutes
This part indicates that the Portuguese users are able to communicate in the language daily. They understand the routine talks, information and warnings placed in public spots, TV and radio program content that is general, etc. 

The Portuguese users are able to use and understand the language in study communicative situations, i.e. understand the main essence of the lecture or conference.

The Portuguese users are able to use the language in workplace: they understand the discussion and talks within their field. 

Utterance

This part comprises of three sections:
Section 1: This section includes a conversation between examiner and candidate, and questions about candidates are asked
Section 2: This section includes interaction between two candidates on decision making or planning an activity
Section 3: This section involves the reaction of the candidate on the stimuli given by the examiner 
  • Total time alloted: 20 minutes with every pair of candidates 
This part indicates that the Portuguese users are able to communicate in the language in day-to-day situations: they are capable to deal with communicative situation that takes place in service areas, transaction areas or in social contexts. At workplace, the users of the Portuguese are able to give and ask comprehensive information on known areas and to take part, though with limitations, in meetings.
Indicates that the Portuguese users in the study area are able to ask questions during seminar or lecture on a known topic, albeit with difficulty; and create presentation on a known topic. 

Scoring

Candidates who attain a score between 85% and 100% are classified as “Very Good”
Candidates who attain a score between 70% and 84% are given the rating as “Good”
Candidates who attain a score between 55% and 69% are given the rating as “Enough”
